Say goodbye to the Beta, say hello to the R2 RTM technical demonstration toolkit.

https://mbs.microsoft.com/partnersource/deployment/methodology/vpc/MSDYGP2010R2_RTM_TechDemoTookit

Now, this blog will be a bit longer than usual.  The first point below is some info on future direction, then below that, information on what we delivered in this release.

First - This is absolutely, positively, without any further ado, the last 32-bit VPC that we'll ship for Microsoft Dynamics GP.  In fact, we're likely the last 32-bit VPC image across all of Microsoft that will be shipped.  Got your attention?  Ok.  So, it's NOT the last image ever, just the last 32-bit image.  We will be delivering, moving forward, 64-bit Hyper-V images.  Some of you have already been asking about Hyper-V images, and we'll try to get you one for the R2 RTM image right away, and then moving forward, expect that as our usual delivery method.  We'll also be publishing a guide on system setup.

Next - What did we deliver in this release?

Updates:

  • GP 2010 R2 RTM, Business Portal, Workflow, SRS/Excel Reports, Web Services
  • Management Reporter 2.0 SP1
  • Forecaster 7 SP3-CU5

 Improvements:

  • Added TWO-A (copy of TWO company) for Multi-company SRS Reporting
  • SQL Native Mode install for Dynamics GP 2010 R2 HomePage Reports
  • Setup AP Batch Approval Workflow

 Added:

  • Multi-company SRS Reporting for TWO and TWO-A
  • Added link to Report Builder 3.0 in Program Files
  • Two new Extend the Reach demos – Light User Vision Demos
  • “Simple” Employee Expense Management example using Excel 2010 and Document Information Panels and driving approval thru SharePoint Designer Workflow and creating an AP Invoice in Dynamics GP 2010 R2 thru Web Services – Demomate Coming
  • Email based workflow approval “Lazy approval” thru SharePoint Designer Workflow  completing tasks in Dynamics GP 2010 R2  Purchase Order thru Workflow Web Services  - Demomate Coming

 Tweaked/Fixed

  • Added SQL Analytics Setting to cube builder in Dynamics GP 2010 R2
  • Enabled Default PO in Purchase Order Screen in Dynamics GP 2010 R2

We worked hard to really give you a meaningful R2 RTM image, and I hope that you find this very valuable.

Microsoft Dynamics GP “12” – Our Windows 8 Vision

$

The Microsoft Dynamics GP team, when considering the creation of our upcoming web client user experience, looked at many technologies that would offer us an architecture for future growth, a feature set that was strong with controls and flexibility, and one that provided us a performance model that benefitted our customers.

Silverlight was a clear standout product in this research.  In fact, we’ll be using Silverlight 5 features as it ships, specifically Silverlight 5 has been architected to deeply support business application development far deeper than other similar toolsets.

Windows 8 is an amazing product and has gained a lot of recent attention, especially around Tiles and Apps.  Those work particularly well in the consumer experience, such as playing media, checking on the local weather, or browsing websites.  Metro-styled apps, with their “clean” interface and open feel, might not be the best interface for a business application that has deep functionality sets, complex transaction windows, and deep reporting requirements.  What is great about the Windows 8 operating system is that it supports multiple styles of applications, and we are making a conscious decision to develop on the one we feel is best suited for business applications.

The Windows 8 platform has also garnered a lot of press around the new browsing experience that currently is slated to not have plug-in support, such as Silverlight.  What might not be evident to everyone is that XAML, the rendering technology for Silverlight is an integral part of the Windows 8 operating system.  And this really flows with where the browsing experience is likely heading – where the browser experience is inherent to the operating system and no longer remains a separate application to run.

The current usage of Internet Explorer as an application running inside of the OS is something that is being re-architected into the always-on, always-connected metaphor where a program such as Internet Explorer becomes irrelevant.  In the future, you’ll be browsing right from within the operating system itself, which means the choice of browser, or technology that it supports, will change to that of what the operating system inherently contains.  In our case, it will have XAML.  We are focused on those technologies that, when market focus shifts to those devices running an always on, always connected OS, we’ll be able to minimize our efforts to get on that platform.  By supporting the toolset that we are supporting today, we are using the Microsoft development platform to deliver a solid experience today, but also giving us the path to upgrade to those devices in the future.

As we all know, technology and toolsets change over time, and our Silverlight investment, with its available controls, the realized performance, and the architecture it offers, is the right choice for the Microsoft Dynamics GP “12” release.  Moving to Windows 8 will require most existing applications and functionality to be ported, whether Silverlight, HTML, or Javascript.

Jonathan Allen explains this well:

“The companies most invested in Silverlight are actually in the best position. These companies have been adopting Silverlight, and Flex, for use in internal applications. This sort of application generally have no HTML and simply use the browser as a delivery mechanism. As such these applications can be ported to the Metro runtime with surprisingly little effort. A new distribution mechanism will be needed, but something like the Windows app store for enterprises is undoubtedly in the works.”

Microsoft Dynamics GP soon to offer 64-bit Hyper-V images only

$

0

For years, the demo image for Microsoft Dynamics GP had been offered as a 32-bit VPC image, which was used as a sales tool for many partners and also helped the ISV community with testing of their products.  But times change, and we have to now change to a 64-bit Hyper-V image.

We had to make this change.  The version of Windows Server that we had to use is 64-bit (Windows Server 2008 R2).  We also historically struggled with other products that required a 64-bit operating  system, such as Microsoft SharePoint.  In order to support a more complete experience across the ever-growing integrated environment, and in order to support a deeper product set, we had to make a break from a 32-bit images.    Finally, 64-bit virtualization is currently the only option available from Microsoft, utilizing Windows Server and Hyper-V.

When we talked to Partners, we heard two distinct stories.  The first group were strong supporters of Hyper-V images, having switched to them already.  The second group were nervous about the switch because they were unsure what it would mean to the hardware and software requirements to run it, and realized that it likely would mean upgraded hardware for their sales teams.

To run the image that we are planning to deliver in December, the computer it runs on will need 8GB of RAM, approx. 200GB of free hard disk space (or an external hard disk with appropriate space and a quick enough interface – preferably USB3), and at least a dual core processor.  These are really the minimum specifications – anything that you do to improve on this will only help you out.  If possible, it is strongly recommended that 16GB of RAM is installed and approx. 300GB of free hard disk space is available.

One concern you may have is setup of the laptop.  Not too many sales consultants desire running Windows 2008 R2 Server as their primary operating system on a laptop.  We realized this, and we will publish shortly a guide to help explain how you can take a Windows 7-based laptop and create a dual-boot-to-VHD (dual boot to a Windows 2008 R2 Server Hyper-V image) scenario.  While it won’t cover your hardware exactly, it will give you insight into the process.

So, what does all this mean?

For those of you with a newer laptop, typically 2 yrs old or less, you might need to add some RAM, and maybe add an external drive.  Older laptops will almost indeed require additional RAM.  For those of you not yet on Windows 7, you’ll need to upgrade your primary operating system of your laptop to Windows 7.  Then work with the guide to get your laptop ready for the next Microsoft Dynamics GP image, a 64-bit Hyper-V image.  As a benefit, many are reporting better performance with the Hyper-V environment.

Happy Halloween

No Tricks  . . . only treats coming from the GP team.  We wish everyone a happy and safe Halloween.

Personal Note:

This past weekend my wife and I spent the weekend with 4 couple friends on a "Staycation".  That's right, instead of traveling we spent the weekend in downtown Fargo!  We made a rule that we could not travel more than a mile from our hotel.  Each couple planned surprise activities including an "Amazing Race Fargo" expedition.  It was so much fun experiencing the city as a tourist and the trip home was so much nicer than the normal plane ride with multiple connections.  We all learned more about our home city and found some interesting, businesses, shopping and eating experiences that we hadn't known before.  I'd highly recommend a staycation if you are wanting to take some time off but don't want the hassle of the flights.

Cheers
